The Belgian Chambers of Commerce:
Certification Service Providers
In order to establish a secure environment for electronic exchanges, the Chambers of Commerce engaged themselves to a partnership with GLOBALSIGN . GLOBALSIGN was created in 1996, under the name BELSIGN, by UBIZEN and the Belgian Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry. Although initially created to promote the electronic signature in Belgium , the mission soon acquired a European dimension. Today, GLOBALSIGN represents an international certification network in full expansion that delivers digital certificates all over Europe and beyond.
GLOBALSIGN also offers her certification services to numerous companies and governmental organisations in order to secure their commercial transactions via communication networks. Moreover, GLOBALSIGN regularly advises the European Commission in matters of electronic certification.
The digital certificates are in some way the electronic equivalent of the identity card. They allow verifying the identity of a person or a company in case of electronic transactions and protecting the integrity of the user data. They also allow the encrypting and signing of the information to be sent. The Chambers of Commerce thus assume the function of Certification Service Provider by guaranteeing the « verification of data relating to the making of a digital certificate ».
